Ladies and gentlemen,welcome to the Haines House,a longtime home of the famous judge,Haines.Although Haines and his family lived here from 1880 until his death in 1915,he was not the original owner of the house.It was built much earlier for a banker who later became a minister.It was bought in 1924 by the State and opened to the public shortly after.The Haines family returned some possessions and furniture to the house for visitors’ enjoyment.I would like to pull your attention to the library on your left.Through the open door,you can see the desk where Haines wrote many of his famous speeches.The living room on your right was used when guests visited.But Haines often sat with his close friends in the kitchen at the back of the house.It was there that they discussed bills that later became law.The Haines liked to spend some time each day in the sunroom.It was here that Haines liked to write letters and sometimes played the violin while his wife,Martha,sewed or took care of her plants.We will now visit the rooms I have just described,beginning with the library.
