　　Behind every festival there is an interesting story.So it is with Water-Splashing Festival,as it is known by the Dai people who live in the area of Xishuangbanna.

　　It was said that the Dai people were once ruled by a cruel king.One day,to free her people,one of the king’s seven wives got him drunk and found out a secret—his neck was weak and easy to wound.With a strand of her hair she killed the king while he slept.But surprisingly his entire head dropped off and turned into blood and fire which would destroy the land.The seven women poured a lot of water on it,finally putting out the fire and bringing peace to their land.

　　Today,the festival seems to be more than a chance in memory of seven women’s heroism and wash away the failure in the festival.The Dai people dance in the squares,play music and splash water down to each other while celebrating the festival.It is bad manners to show any sign of anger no matter how wet you get.In fact,the more water the better,because water is a symbol of life and good luck.
