Stephen Hawking was born in Oxford, England, on January 8, 1942.When he was young, he enjoyed riding horses and playing with other children.When Hawking was 21, shortly before his first marriage, he came down with a serious illness and doctors said he would not survive more than two years.He fought against the disease and survived much longer than other patients with the same illness.He gradually lost the use of his arms, legs, and voice, and was almost completely unable to move around.Hawking needed a team of nurses to care for him.
Hawking wrote A Brief History of Time in 1988 and it soon became a best-seller and he became famous around the world.He was respected by people and he enjoyed encouraging young people to study science.Though he was a physically disabled person, he was not mentally disabled.
