W:Have you heard the news about Henry?

M:No.What happened to him?

W:Well, you know he goes mountain biking, right?

M:Yes.I’ve seen him on his bike a lot.

W:Well,he went biking outside yesterday. He was in the mountains during the big thunderstorm in the afternoon. He had to sit under a tree to avoid lightning.

M:Under a tree?That’s really dangerous.

W:Is it?

M:Oh,yeah. It’s a foolish thing.Did you hear about those golfers who were hit by lightning under a tree?

W:No.Oh,that’s awful.

M:Yeah. They were taken to the hospital.

W:Luckily,Henry wasn’t struck by lightning.I will tell him not to do that later.

W:On the health program today,we have a guest who may have some interesting advice.Dr.John Squire, author of How to Beat Stress.Welcome,Dr.Squire.

M:Hello.

W:Obviously lots of people feel stressed,so what can we do once we suffer from stress?

M:Stress isn’t so dangerous as thought of.It is like smoking. If you really want to stop, you can.By changing the way you think and the way you behave, you can reduce the amount of stress. You don’t need to see a doctor and you don’t need sleeping pills! Exercise is the best thing you can do.

W:What is the problem with people nowadays?

M:Most people just drive to work, take the lift to their offices, and sit there all day.I suggest we should all make the best use of our legs.Walking is a good way to relax,so a 30-minute walk a day keeps the stress away.

W:Hey,Michael! Where are you heading?Your new house?

M:Hi,it’s you,Linda.I just came back from an art exhibition.I’m going to the library now.

W:Really?Is it good?

M:Yeah, pretty good,I should say.You know I don’t have any artistic ability, but I can appreciate the stuff there. There are portraits, oil paintings and watercolours. It’s really amazing.Sometimes they can fool your eyes—you have to look really closely to see that’s not a photo or something real. It’s a great exhibition.

W:What paintings do you like best?

M:I would have to say the oil paintings. They’re just so colourful and alive.

W:Yeah. That’s one thing that I like about them. But I can’t stand the traditional style.I find it so boring.

M:Yeah,I’m a little tired of that style, too.I’m crazy about art,and I wish that I were able to paint as well as these artists. You should go and have a look at this exhibition if you can spare a day. It’s really great.

W:Well,I was just thinking about what to do for the weekend. Now you’ve given me a good idea.I’m really looking forward to it.

M:Trust me.It’s worthwhile and the ticket is not expensive.

W:OK.See you.I’ve got to go and get the tickets.

Text 10

M:I had wanted to visit Argentina for a long time.Having worked as a lawyer for the past 13 years,I was considering a profession change or profession break to teaching in the future.I applied to Travellers Worldwide to teach English in Argentina so that I could get a “taste” of teaching and experience the life in Argentina.

I could only commit to a two-week period because I was allowed to ask for leave for two weeks each year. The staff at Travellers and the local school were very flexible and helpful in providing me with food and housing.

Everything about my placement was excellent.Melina, the manager, was friendly and very helpful.During my two-week “working holiday”,there was so much delicious food and so many friendly people.

At the school,my role was mainly teaching conversational English. All the other English teachers prepared lesson plans for me before each class that covered vocabulary, grammar, and many other things for the class,as well as suggested activities and reading from course books.
